They were not one-dimensional creatures, but rather complicated and dynamic living beings who were not driven solely by their cardinal sin - perhaps with the sole exception of Gluttony, who was the one Homunculi originally created for a different purpose.NOTE: Currently set to private due to Reddit's API changes, see Ĭome post anything related to the Fullmetal Alchemist anime and manga franchise! Questions, discussion, analysis, fan art, cosplay, quality memes, etc. Nonetheless, like humans, the Homunculi were capable of learning, progression, change, growth and emotional divergence. The Homunculi were named ironically not because they were the opposite of the sin they were assigned, but because Father intended them to be static beings that represented the one sin he implanted within them. The Homunculi themselves displayed this countless times. Father’s inability to understand the complicated emotions of humanity led him to fail to realize that human beings and Homunculi are not black and white in their nature. However, not only did Father display most of the sins in his behavior, implying that he never truly discarded them, but as the sins are one side of a coin, opposite to the seven virtues, it is possible that he also discarded those within the creation of the Homunculi. A true creature of hubris would never have stood lower than another, yet Selim accepted his lesser position below Father.įather discarded the seven deadly sins because he considered them useless human emotions he wished to become the perfect being. As pride itself is the father of sin, it was impossible for the character of Father to remove his own pride and place it into another, hence Selim’s loyalty and lesser position to Father. However, Pride’s name was never truly passed to him from Father. It is outright stated by Kimblee in the tempest of souls that Pride had discarded his namesake for survival. The fall of Pride’s hubris came during his defeat at the hands of Edward Elric. As avarice is one of the desire sins - the accumulation of material possessions - Greed completely discarded this for the opposite virtue of charity, ending his own life for the benefit of others. Throughout the majority of the story, he announced his desire to obtain everything, but in the finale of the series, Greed abandoned his namesake and sacrificed himself for the one thing he truly ever wanted: friendship. Greed is one of the Homunculi with a clearer conflict with his name. Wrath usually leads to the concept of revenge - a concept that Bradley threw aside to indulge in a fight he had no emotional connection to. Even during his final battle with Scar, it is purely a contest of two nameless warriors whose sole desire is to survive. Out of all the Homunculi, he had trained himself to restrain his emotions. King Bradley, the Homunculi of Wrath, was a man who masked his true identity for years, hidden within the ranks of the military and keeping a reserved nature even when dispatching his enemies. The sin of wrath is the inability to control one’s emotions, falling into rage and anger with a click of a finger. This act in itself is the opposite of the cardinal sin of sloth. Conversely, Sloth spent the majority of the series exerting himself with a particular aim, albeit one given to him by another. Not only was his immense speed a humorous method to contradict his name, but the sin that sloth is associated with has no aim or desire for exertion. For a character with a surface-level portrayal, the irony of his name is also surface-level. Sloth was the Homunculi with the least development, making an in-depth analysis of his name redundant.
